MARQUES Spring Meeting

Claudia Csáky, a member of the MARQUES Education Team, attended the Spring Meeting in Frankfurt last week. A particular highlight was the workshop organized by the Education Team on the topic of “Investigating with AI.” The participants’ response showed that the workshop addressed a highly topical issue.

The focus was on a key message: The effective protection of intellectual property rights—whether in product development, marketing, or enforcement—depends largely on the quality and accuracy of the underlying information. The workshop offered exciting insights into modern, AI-powered research tools, some of which are still relatively unknown. What all these tools have in common, however, is that despite all technological progress, a sound understanding of data sources, careful selection of tools, and human oversight remain crucial.

In the subsequent discussion, many practice-relevant questions were addressed—including potential risks such as liability disclaimers, dealing with unreliable results, and specific use cases of AI in enforcement proceedings.

Conclusion: Artificial intelligence opens up new possibilities—but its successful use requires expertise, critical thinking, and responsible handling.
